Without Further Ado Meet Katrina From Warm Vanilla Sugar
I love venturing out on the Internet and stumbling upon awesome foodies…don’t you? Well imagine my excitement when I landed on Katrina’s blog, Warm Vanilla Sugar, in the summer of 2011. It’s sure a cozy, welcoming spot that I encourage you to visit.
After several e-mails back and forth and my long absence from blogging on here, it’s without further ado that I’d like to finally, finally give you a chance to meet Katrina…read about her passion for food blogging.
How marvy that you were able to spend 6 months in Switzerland, although I can imagine you are happy to be home. Talk to us about some of your tastiest food adventures in Switzerland.
Living in Switzerland was a dream come true. I got to meet great people and of course, try some really tasty food. The Swiss are big on eating cheese, potatoes, and of course, chocolate! It’s true comfort food. Three of my favorite meals are cheese fondue, raclette and rosti.
Cheese fondue was something I had a little too much of, and it still makes me drool thinking about. It’s a great way to enjoy Swiss cheese with bread, and is unbelievably tasty.
Raclette is something that is best made at home. It’s melted cheese on potatoes. Boring? NO! It’s fantastic, and super yummy. In restaurants they just heat the cheese and put it on the potatoes, but in a proper setting the cheese is slowly roasted over hot coals. Very cool!
Rosti is grated potatoes mixed with egg and cheese that is fried and then baked until crispy. It’s impossible to only have one serving! I love Swiss food.
Where do you turn to for recipes and cooking inspiration? Please explain.
I have a pretty big cookbook collection, but recently I’ve been looking online for recipes. Every morning I open my whopping 77 favorite bookmarked cooking/baking blogs and check for something new. My current favorite is Jessica from How Sweet It Is. She comes up with the craziest, fattiest, most mouth watering stuff. Love it.
What do you find most challenging about food blogging? Please explain.
Definitely taking good pictures. I don’t have an SLR camera yet (getting one soon!) so I can only photograph things for my blog in the morning. There are lots of things I make in the evening that I would love to share but the photos never turn out.
What do you see for the future on your blog? How are you going to accomplish it?
My blog is currently just a WordPress blog, and as happy as having a blog at all makes me, I one day would like my own website. I love what I do, so I would never make blogging my full time job, but I do want to fancy it up a bit and make it a bit more “me”.
Tell us about your passion for running marathons…how do you fuel your body to stay fit?
Running is my high. I have been running for pleasure since I was 15 and these days I hit the pavement 5 days a week. I’m a vegetarian, so I have to monitor my food intake quite strictly, I have a list full of healthy foods that I try to get in every day, and others that I try to get in once a week. In short I have at least 5 servings of fruits and veggies, 50g of protein, and 5 servings of grain…ooh, and 5 servings of chocolate. It’s a health food, right?
I’m a 24-year old biologist, living in Ottawa, Canada, and love to experiment with different recipes. This past summer I lived in Delemont, Switzerland, researching insects, training for a marathon, hiking in and around the Swiss Alps, and of course, baking. I try to find a balance between learning about this crazy world we live in to diving into the adventures of baked goods. I have a mean sweet tooth, and thought it would be a good idea to share some of my baking ideas with others. I’m by no means a professional and I don’t have an awesome SLR camera to take photos like many of the other food bloggers. But, I love what I’m doing. And I’ll never post a recipe that doesn’t turn out!
