Halloween Kitchen – Witches Logs
Halloween is a fun time for both children and adults. It is a time to have parties and to go along with the theme of a Halloween Party why not serve refreshments that have fun, spooky names?
I have learned over the years that just because you talk about snacks, that does not always mean they need to be unhealthy and horrible for the waistline. Making treats from cereal, dark chocolate and nuts mixed with some marshmallow (I know marshmallow is almost pure sugar) but the rest of the recipe has more of a healthy undertone. As long as you eat these treats in moderation, why not have fun with them!
When the Autumn season is close at hand, not only does my Halloween Spirit come alive but all of the things I love to do; also awakens. I love to cook and I love to bake, both things I do not do a lot of in the summer especially living in the South. I love to create new recipes and trust me if I did not have a fantastic husband who was not afraid to try to new things, my cooking abilities would not go very far. Of course I usually never tell him what he is eating until after I get a response from him if he likes the dish or not! There has only been a few things I have made that he was not crazy for not bad for nine years. Two of the dishes I did not like either, so it all worked out good.
When we look through our pantries often we will have little bits of this and that tucked away in the back corners. Often cereal is one of the main things. If you use your imagination, the cereal could turn into a yummy treat just by adding a few extra ingredients. That is how I created “Witches Logs”.
Witches Logs
4 tablespoons of butter
1 bag mini marshmallows
6 cups of semi broken Cheerios
1/2 bag mini dark chocolate chips
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 bag regular size dark chocolate chips (for melting)
Place your Cheerios into a large zip lock bag and take a rolling pin and go over the bag a few times to break up the Cheerios. You do not want them powdered just a little broken.
Place the butter and marshmallows into a pot and gentle melt. When the marshmallow has completely melted pour it over the Cheerios, nuts and mini chocolate chips and stir together.
Pour this mixture into a greased pan, lined with parchment paper for easy removal, and press it flat. After it has cooled cut the Cheerio mixture into thin logs about 1/2″ by 3″ long. Melt some dark chocolate in a double boiler and dip the logs into the chocolate so half of them are covered with chocolate. Lay them out on parchment paper and place in the refrigerator until they harden.

Eva!! How yummy, I think your recipe sounds great. And I think it is great you have a husband that allows you to experiment. As it should be. I have one of those too. Mine knows he needs to be honest or he’ll get it again. But so far, doing okay. Great picture too. Loved reading you.
Susan, that is how Bill is; he knows how I am in the kitchen and if he does not like something if he doesn’t say so, than he knows I will make it again. I will tell you these Witches Logs are so delicious. I made a plate of them for my husbands guys at work, and they disappeared! I asked Bill if had one and he said, “Actually I ate two and others did too.” I was hoping there would have been at least one left but there wasn’t. Thanks for commenting.
Mmm! Those witch logs look yummy…thanks for sharing the recipe too. I’m tempted to try this with wheat chex…whatcha’ think?
Correen, everything is great with wheat chex; yum!! I asked Bill last night what he thought they would taste like using Raisin Bran Cereal. The whole purpose of creating these was to use up left over cereal instead of wasting it. I bet the wheat chex would be delicious!!
Witches logs sound great and look so Halloweeny!
Joan, they are good, if you try them be sure to come back and let everyone know how you like them or what you did different. Thanks for commenting.
These Halloween treats look amazing perfect for my sweet tooth. I spent all last weekend cooking so I think Marta needs to make these for me on Saturday. What a good way to use up leftover cereal, I’m thinking you could add oats too?! Delicious chocolate recipe.
Oh, that would be interesting to use oats. But I love the fact of using left over cereal instead of wasting it. You will have to come back and let everyone know how they were and what kind of cereal you added. How exciting!!
Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. This would be a great way to use up bits of cereal rather than wasting them. Can’t wait to try them!
Thank you so much for commenting. Please be sure to come back and let us know how you liked them. I made some the other day using bits of Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch-they are good, but there is something about Cheerio’s that just hits the spot.
Wow, these look amazing!
Thanks Jessica I appreciate the comment
